How Do You Know if Your Lawn Needs Thatch Removal?
Thatch is the build-up of dead grass and other plant life on the surface of your soil. This organic debris forms a compacted layer that can prevent your grass from reaching the sunlight.
If your lawn is struggling to grow, thatching may be the culprit of its poor condition. To confirm if this is the case, you can always request professional assistance from our team. We’ll examine the area where the soil meets the base of the grass blades and determine the thickness of the thatch to give you an understanding of your lawn’s well-being.
If you notice any of the following signs, you may need our dethatching services:
- Thin blades of grass
- Weak grass growth
- Pale color
- The grass feels spongy underfoot
- The lawn seems impenetrable
If you see any of these signs, we’re happy to examine your grass's health and recommend a suitable course of action to restore it to its original glory.

Healthy Spring Clean-Up
Performing dethatching can be a stressful process for your lawn. That’s why we advise that it be done during the spring clean-up when your lawn is healthy and can better handle the recovery process.
We’ve worked with all types of lawn grass, so we know when the right dethatching time is for your grass. We generally perform power raking during early spring and early fall for cool-season grasses like perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass. As for warm-season varieties like Zoysia and Bermuda grass, our dethatching is done in spring or early summer after they’ve fully greened up.
Trust your lawn care with the industry's best for optimal health and growth.
Quality Dethatching Tools on Your Property
We invest in the best dethatching equipment to provide our customers with the finest service in the industry. Our dethatching equipment includes:
Rigid garden rake or bow rake: These are ideal for smaller lawns, light thatch, and general thatch maintenance through the growing season.
Convex or "dethatching" rake: This specialized manual rake clears dead matter in the lawn.
Power rakes: This tool has rotating tines that dig into the thatch and lift it out as you push. These rakes are suitable for larger areas of thinner thatch layers with grass that can withstand intense raking.
Vertical mower: This aggressive approach is ideal for lawns with thick thatch or needing total renovation. The vertical blades on the mower penetrate the thatch and soil to lift out the unwanted layer.
We choose the most suitable dethatching tool based on factors such as the size of your landscape, thatching density, and your goals and budget.
Learn More About Dethatching
The thatch layer is a normal accumulation of organic matter that sits on top of the soil, at the base of the grass plant. It is a benefit to the lawn, full of nutrients and full of beneficial microorganisms, it also prevents the lawn from drying out too quickly. In a healthy lawn the thatch layer could be half an inch to 1 inch thick. If the thatch has accumulated to more than 1 inch, which is not very common, then dethatching could be helpful. If the thatch layer is too thick, it may result in a shallow root system of the grass, which leads to dry, disease prone and weak turf. The dethatching should be done early in the season, often with the spring cleanup, before the grass plants fill in. When done at the proper time, the dethatching rake will lift out some (not all) of the thatch so it can be mulched or removed. Core aeration is another method that can be done in spring or fall to reduce thatch.
Thatch is not due to leaving grass clippings on the lawn or from using a mulching mower to chop up leaves. Mulching is a healthy practice, which results in a richer, organic soil and it provides significant nutrients to your lawn. By using a mulching lawn mower, you can decrease the amount of fertilizer you are using on your lawn by one pound per thousand square feet per year.
- We go over the big areas two or three times with the rakes on the mowers.
- Smaller areas are hand raked or we use a small power rake.
- Thatch is then mulched into nutrients that are a benefit instead of a hindrance.
- Most sunny areas can benefit from having this done every year with the spring cleanup.

Why You Need Our Professional Power Raking Service
Removing thick thatch is crucial to maintaining a healthy and thriving lawn. Excess thatch can:
- Block water and fertilizer from reaching the roots.
- Cause poor growth due to stress.
- Increase the likelihood of disease.
- Receive negative impact from heat.
- Reduce the transfer of essential nutrients and water.
- Suffocate and trap grassroots.
- Affect overall lawn health.
While dethatching is important, we don’t advise attempting a dethatching on your own. Without experience and the proper tools, you may cause damage to your lawn, including fast moisture loss, germination of lawn weeds, and deprivation of essential nutrients.
When you think your lawn could use a dethatching treatment, we’ll diagnose it first to determine if the benefits outweigh the drawbacks and how we can prevent any problems from arising with alternative methods. We will also consider whether your lawn might require core aeration to allow nutrients and sunlight to reach your grassroots.
